Thursday August 30th

Today in class we warmed up with a review of macro "big" molecules.

Here are some key notes from today and yesterday.

The 4 main types of macro molecules are:

  1. Lipids
  2. Carbohydrates
  3. Proteins
  4. Nucleic Acid
Poly means many

Mono means one

  • Mono means one
  • Poly means many
  • Monomers are small molecules that bond to create polymers
  • They bond through a dehydration reaction (think removal of H20)
Sucrose is a polymer made from the 2 monomers glucose, and fructose. A starch is a polymer made up of 3 or more glucose monomers.

Next is a list of the monomer types for each of the for macro-molecule types:

Lipids--Glycerol and Fatty Acids
Carbohydrates--Sacharides
Nucleic Acid--Nucleotides
Protein--Amino Acids

A peptide bond is the form of bond used to create a protein.
